My first category of New Year’s Resolutions is spiritual growth. This one tops the list every year because it’s the most important and because we’ll never be ‘grown’ on this side of heaven. My goals don’t change very much. I simply continue in my journey to draw closer to the Lord.
I tweaked my goals in this area just a little bit. I always have as a goal to read through the Bible in its entirety. This year, I am purposing to raise the bar a little and read through the Bible once a quarter. I’m linking that goal to my personal reading goals as well because I just don’t spend enough time reading. Oh, I’ve had good excuses, especially this last year. But, the excuses now sleep through the night. So, once a quarter it is. It’s lofty but resolutions are meant to stretch me.
Another goal I have in the spiritual growth category is to diligently teach my children correct doctrine. It amazed me when I hit my 30s and began the journey of studying out for myself sound doctrine. They don’t teach these things from the pulpit! (at least not the pulpits of the churches where I grew up and sat through my early adulthood) That is thankfully not true of our current assembly. Nevertheless, we must train up our children in the way they should go and one aspect of that weighty task is to teach sound doctrine. My plan is to incorporate a journey through Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem into our Bible time during our school week. It will take a while because it’s a big volume full of lots of meat. But, just like eating an elephant, we’ll take one bite at a time.
My other subcategories under the heading of spiritual growth are an ongoing process. I want to draw closer to the Lord in prayer this year. I want to do battle with my many besetting sins to a greater degree this year. I want to die more to myself this year. Also linked to my personal reading is to dive into at least six books on theology. A.W. Pink is at the top of that list. I plan to work through ALL his books (though that will take me longer than just one year) I have a few other authors I’d like to squeeze into 2012 as well. I’ll flesh that out as the year progresses.
There you have the broad frame of my spiritual growth goals for 2012. I’d love to hear your goals in the area of spiritual growth. I always need new inspiration!
